LINDBERGH LESSONS

"The photographer,
even in fashion & portraiture,
has to have a standpoint.
It's important to know
what you stand for, no?
Most people just take pictures
but they stand for nothing.
They follow trends
don't know why."

"If photographers are responsible for creating or reflecting
an image of women in society,
then I must say,
there is only one way for the future,
& this is to define women
as strong & independent.
This should be the responsibility of photographers today:
to free women,
and finally everyone,
from the terror of youth & perfection."

"Your inspiration is better
if it comes from many different sources
& your sensibilities will transform
all those influences & inspiration
into your own visual world.
It's like reading the book
instead of watching the movie."

"Photography gives you the opportunity
to use your sensibility
& everything you are
to say something about
& be part of the world around you.
In this way,
you might discover who you are,
with a little luck,
you might discover something much larger
than yourself."

BROKEN

“Life cracks us into unrecognizable shards
of former incarnations.
Slivers of our hurt and our pain and our shame
nestles next to fragments
of our truth, our divinity,
our fierce reclamation of power."

"It is this very brokenness that allows us to knit together,
kaleidoscope style.
And we spin and shift and turn to the light
until we appear brilliant,
lit from within.
Suddenly we are revealed;
unexpected beauty born directly from brokenness."

"We have to be willing to break in order to become.”

WHITE NOISE

softly into a new week.
packing for tomorrow's shoot
an early train ride away,
picking out white details
on a dark day.

A QUIET HUM

My soul month November arrived
with its diffused skies,
darkening nights
& invitation to retreat a little,
dream some more,
quieten down.

The colder & shorter days
give a special quality to light.
That’s when the earth’s muted greys glimmer.
A whole lot of softness with edge,
I think that’s what I’m forever trying to capture.
Not too much of one without the other.

A warm buzz inside
from spending time with a dear friend yesterday,
a walk with my husband today along the coast,
the breeze adding an extra spring in the step.
Current state of mind:
subdued on the outside,
a riot of colour inside.

After dinner,
a glass of red & this interview with Ellen Von Unwerth
(my goodness how kind and down-to-earth she seems…).

Wishing you a lovely rest of the weekend.
Just that, rest.

x
